Choosing the right estate-tag sale company to handle your sale

By:
Paul J. Dunn

We know it’s not an easy time when it comes to choosing an estate sale company to liquidate your recently deceased loved ones possessions. I recently lost my father, so I know what’s involved in the process of grieving, making arrangements and settling the estate. Adding in the emotional factor made the task daunting, even for me as an estate sale professional.

Its unfortunate but a few unscrupulous companies will exploit you in this time of need. However, there are many exceptional companies in the market place today; of course Lucky Rabbit Estate Sales is one of them. Google us, our reputation precedes us.

I always suggest that prospective clients visit one of our tag or estate sales to see how a professional company operates. Our sales are always run in a courteous and efficient manner. We never forget that we are in the home of deceased or sick loved one. It’s about respect and decorum.

Other companies allow hordes of people to enter the home all at the same time, trashing it completely.  It creates an unsafe condition for employees and patrons alike.  This is something Lucky Rabbit Estate Sales will never do to your home or property.

I would also suggest that you Google any company (and the principal owners) you may consider hiring. You wouldn’t want to hire a convicted felon that did jail time for any type of crime.

Don’t be impressed by the numbers other companies throw at you! They often high ball the contents of your home only to get the contract and clean-out. At the conclusion of sale they simply say sorry and most likely blame it on you.

Lucky Rabbit Estate Sales always gives fair and honest assessments. We test, weigh and price all precious metals according to the daily spot market.  We have most diamond jewelry “retail value appraised” at no cost to you. We know a lot, but no one knows everything. We maintain excellent relationships with experts in every genre of antiques and art. With Lucky Rabbit Estate Sales you can rest assured that your valuables will not be sold for pennies on the dollar.

Read the contract! One company claims to have no up front fees and no advertising fees, however if you read the contract closely you’ll see that you’re paying for all the advertisement costs at the end of the sale. The same company has a clause that allows them to buy any left over items for $1.00. No matter the real value. That’s just wrong!
So READ THE CONTRACT!

Some companies also claim to provide free security. We have an on staff retired police officer with a carry permit that not only protects your valuables but also the proceeds of the sale. This service is provided free at our discretion.  No other company does that.

I wouldn’t advise hiring any company that doesn’t at least have a testimonial page on the website they maintain. That’s a total red flag in my opinion.  Why wouldn’t they want the praise! Word of mouth is paramount to the success of any company in this industry.  Checkable references are always a plus!  My references are readily available to all prospective clients.

Also check to see if they are associated with any professional organizations related to the estate sale field. We are members of Antiques & Collectibles National Association, Angies List, Manta and many others.

The bottom line: Do your homework!

LUCKY RABBIT HOPPED OVER TO NJ

Tom and I hopped over the GW Bridge yesterday to check out the most amazing house. It was built in the early 1900’s by the most recent original occupant.
The family was very prominent and viewed as upstanding members in the community. They also had very active social life in the art scene and hobnobbed with some of the most prominent families in Manhattan.
It was like taken a step back in time. Nothing had changed in the house since its occupancy way back when.
It was unique in that the woman who lived in the home was a secret hoarder of quality antiques and basically never threw anything away.
Tom and I were like kids in a candy store. We found all sorts of interesting items dating back to the turn of the century.
Loads of ephemera, furniture, antique grand father clocks, art work, musical instruments, lamps, light fixtures, wall sconces, china, and crystal. I could sit here all day listing the items we looked at!
All three floors are packed with antiques! It really was a picker’s dream house!

Storage Unit Tag-sale: Day Two

Wow is all I can say! We have to add 3 additional empty storage  units to this sale just to set up the 1000 or so boxes. We will have a total of seven units set up with everything from A to Z.  If you cant find what you buy, collect or resell at this sale then ill be a monkeys uncle.

The more we dig through these storage containers, the more amazed we are by the items we're finding.
I was able to snap some pictures today of only one set-up unit. Most consisting of the art work, Vintage Sansui model G-22000 amp and receiver. Asian porcelain, statues in resin, metal, cement and hand carved wood.  antique pipes,  Two American WWI Calvary swords with scabbards known as the "Patton Sword" model # 1913, both are in real good condition. professional porcelain kiln, early American Brass fireplace tool holder.
 Much more to come...

Sunset Park Estate Sale

Tom and I had the pleasure of meeting a very nice family in Brooklyn yesterday. They have a wonderful 2 family home plus basement that is packed with 60 years of accumulation. They are the original owners of the home and one of the last holdouts in the neighborhood. It is going to be an amazing sale and a true pleasure to work with this awesome family.
